We’ve all heard this line: Life begins at 50.

It’s often said with a wink, a laugh, or a hint of irony — as if to soften the blow of growing older. But what if it’s not just a feel-good phrase? What if it’s true — not in a forced, cheerleader sort of way, but in a deeper, quieter, and more liberating sense?

The Turning Point

I remember speaking to a friend who’d recently turned 58. She said,

You know what’s different now? I don’t care so much about what others think. I’m finally doing things for myself.

This line stayed with me. Because it captured something essential — not the absence of struggle, but the emergence of clarity. For many, this point in life is when a certain weight lifts.

Personally, that shift came when I turned 50. I found myself reflecting on the five decades I had spent on this planet. And one question surfaced sharply: if I was still going to live my life in a way that sought approval — from bosses, clients, elders, or peers — then when would I truly begin living for myself? Through life, we all wear masks tailored to meet expectations — expectations of teachers, parents, employers, investors, even society at large. Some of it is necessary. But much of it, perhaps, is our own overthinking. Crossing 50 gave me permission to shed some of those layers. To be more myself. To act from authenticity rather than anticipation.

What Each Decade Brings

In our 20s and 30s, we are builders. We build careers, families, reputations. We strive to prove ourselves — gathering skills, nurturing connections, stacking up experiences and achievements to climb higher.

By our 40s, we start to shift. We become editors. We begin to trim what no longer serves us, tweak the rest. We draw boundaries. We seek balance. We move a little slower, but with more intention. We begin to rebuild, but now with wisdom.

And in our 50s? If we allow ourselves, we step into something rare — personal honesty. The roles we play no longer define us entirely. We are more than our titles, more than our functions.

Who are you when no one is watching?

That is the quiet, powerful question that midlife invites us to ask.

The Weight of Choices

Over the years, we accumulate expectations — as sons, daughters, parents, colleagues, leaders, friends. These expectations shape us, but they also weigh us down. We carry the burden of being ‘someone’ in every space we occupy. And that weight can become invisible, until one day we notice the fatigue. This phase of life can be the invitation to set some of that down. To keep what serves us, and release what doesn’t.

What Are You Starting at 50?

This stage of life isn’t a plateau. It’s a new gateway. A space where you can:

  • Learn something for the joy of it, not the job of it
  • Travel without ticking boxes
  • Make peace with your past
  • Reconnect with neglected parts of yourself
  • Start something new, without needing to scale or brand it

This isn’t theoretical. For years, I believed that my last venture — Social Wavelength — would be the one I’d retire from. It was fulfilling, purposeful, and exciting. And when it was acquired and eventually became Mirum, the journey felt complete. After my exit, I had no plans of starting something new. I expected to consult, mentor, and take life a little easier.

But in a matter of months, I felt something stirring. I realised I still had ideas. Energy. A drive that consulting alone couldn’t satisfy. And that’s when I knew — I wasn’t done. I wasn’t even close.

What about you?

Have you noticed a shift in your mindset after 50? What have you let go of? What new thing have you allowed yourself to explore — or at least dream about? I’d love to hear your thoughts. This space is meant to start a conversation. So let’s do just that.
